What Zya Has To Say

Zya Chambers

The writing process has impacted me tremendously. Lewis Howard Latimer was more than just an inventor; he was a pioneer who changed the course of history. His brilliance, resilience, and commitment to progress paved the way for the technology we depend on today. Growing up in Fort Myers, which is where Thomas Edison spent much of his time, I knew nothing of Mr. Latimer. They don’t tell you in the history books that it was Latimer’s expertise in drafting and patents that made him an indispensable partner to Edison. By recognizing and celebrating his contributions, we not only honor his legacy but also inspire future generations to pursue innovation, education, and excellence, no matter the obstacles they may face. As he would say, “We create our future, by well improving present opportunities: however, few and small they are.“ His quote alone says speaks volumes about the opportunities we have, whether through scholarships or everyday life as African Americans. We must take advantage of each and every opportunity, no matter how big or small. After all, it’s the little things that lead to big adventures! A huge thanks to everyone who made this scholarship possible!!!

I am deeply honored to have been selected as the winner of the Black History Essay Writing Competition. This recognition means so much to me, not just as a personal achievement, but as a chance to contribute to the ongoing celebration and reflection on the incredible legacy of Black history and culture.

I would like to thank the organizers, judges, and sponsors of the competition for creating this important platform to amplify our voices and honor the stories that have shaped our communities. I’m grateful for the opportunity to share my perspective and to learn from the work of others who are equally passionate about history, identity, and progress.

To everyone who has supported me—my family, friends, and mentors—thank you for your encouragement and belief in my voice.

This award inspires me to continue learning, writing, and advocating for truth, justice, and equality. Let’s keep honoring the past while shaping a brighter future together.

Thank you again.

Winning 3rd place in the Black History essay contest has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Writing about the March on Washington allowed me to explore how collective action and unity can drive meaningful social change. The process of researching, analyzing, and organizing my ideas strengthened my appreciation for history and the ways past events continue to shape our society today. This essay taught me the power of words to honor the struggles and achievements of those who fought for justice, and it inspired me to think more deeply about how I can contribute to positive change in my own community.
